Pope Francis believes there is a third world war in Ukraine: ‘All great powers are involved’

Pope Francis considers the war in Ukraine a new world war and believes that armed conflicts serve economic interests, starting with those of the arms industry.

Francis said no one could deny that the world faces a world war, as “all the great powers are involved. The Pope commented, “A technician told me that if weapons were not produced for a year, the problem of hunger in the world could be solved.”

Pope Francis considers the war in Ukraine, the third to break out in just over a century, to be a new world war and believes armed conflicts serve economic interests, starting with those of the arms industry.

In an interview with Swiss public broadcaster RTS on the 10th anniversary of his pontificate, Francis said no one could deny that the world is currently facing a world war, as “all the great powers are involved, and the battlefield is Ukraine”.

“Think that in a little more than a hundred years, there have been three world wars: 1914-1918, 1939-1945 and now this one, which is a world war that has just begun.”

The Pope commented, “A technician told me that if weapons were not produced for a year, the world’s hunger problem could be solved. It is the market that created war. Wars are used to test weapons.”

In this regard, he mentioned the use in the war in Ukraine of new types of drones “that are being tested”. “If other things were tested in favour of human development, education or food, that would be good, but the attraction of money is man’s greatest enemy. The devil is coming through his pocket,” he added.
