Russian Missiles on Kiev: Pediatric Hospital Hit

In a tragic event, Russian missiles have struck Kiev, targeting the Okhmatdyt Pediatric Hospital. This hospital is one of the most important in Ukraine, caring for sick children. The attack has left many in shock and disbelief, as people thought the hospital would never be attacked.

Doctors, nurses, and mothers expressed their fear and pain after the raid. The missile strike also damaged a maternity ward, residential buildings, and offices in Kiev. This attack is part of a larger missile assault by Russia on various cities across Ukraine.

Widespread Damage and Casualties

The missile strike on Kiev was part of a larger attack that also hit cities like Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Slovyansk, Kramatorsk, and Pokrovsk. These attacks resulted in at least 36 deaths and 137 injuries. Ukrainian forces managed to shoot down 30 out of the 38 rockets launched.

In Kiev, the situation was dire. Nurses were seen covered in blood, mothers were fleeing with their children, and children undergoing chemotherapy had to be treated on the side of the road. At least two people died in the hospital strike, reminding everyone of the other tragedies faced by Ukrainian health facilities during the war.

International Outcry and Condemnation

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking from Warsaw, promised retaliation and called for a stronger response from the West. He urged the world to see and respond to what Russia is doing. He also called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the attacks on Ukrainian civilians.

International leaders condemned the attacks. Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called them war crimes, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the raids as “particularly shocking.” The French Foreign Ministry called the attack “barbarity,” and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, “Attacking innocent children is the most depraved of actions.”

EU High Representative Josep Borrell emphasized that Ukraine needs air defence systems now. This will be a key topic at the upcoming NATO summit in Washington, where Zelensky hopes for strong support for Kiev.

Response and Support from Allies

Poland has offered new security support to Ukraine. Donald Tusk announced an agreement to intercept missiles and drones launched towards Poland from Ukraine. This agreement also includes the creation of the ‘Ukrainian Legion,’ a group of Ukrainian volunteers trained in Poland to help defend their country.

Russia, however, denied targeting the hospital. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed, without evidence, that the damage was caused by a Ukrainian air defense missile. Ukrainian authorities refuted this, stating that the hospital was directly hit by a Russian missile.

Conclusion

The missile attack on Kiev’s pediatric hospital has caused widespread horror and condemnation. As the war continues, the international community is being called to respond more forcefully to the ongoing violence and support Ukraine in defending its people, especially its most vulnerable citizens.
